Sergeant First Class Eli Gamzo, 20, from Ashdod, was a platoon commander in the Paratroopers Brigade and fell on Black Saturday while defending Kibbutz Yad Mordechai.

The commander told him that only officers were fighting at the moment, but Eli said, "You're coming to pick me up, I want to fight too. Before he left, he said to me, "Mom, two and a half years ago, I swore allegiance to the State of Israel. Don't cry for me.' He and two other soldiers prevented the enemy from entering Yad Mordechai. He was hit by three bullets but continued to fight.'.

First Sergeant Etai Eliyahu Marciano was also killed in the battle, and the third soldier was wounded. Two civilians were killed.

A map of Kibbutz Yad Mordechai was found on one of the terrorists who was killed in the clash, indicating that the cell had planned to attack the kibbutz. By falling, Eli prevented the terrorist cell from entering the kibbutz and stopped the attack from continuing in the nearby communities.

With the help of the organization 'L'Zikron Le'Nitzach,' tens of thousands of shekels were quickly raised and a magnificent Torah scroll was dedicated to the memory of Eli, may his memory be blessed.
